When travelling, going to a museum is a must activity. By doing this you will understand the shape of Modern Malaysia. In this country we have hundreds of museums spread all over and the notable ones are located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. For some people, they learnt about a country culture, history, issues through arts; as what you may see in Musee du Lourve Paris, The Metropolitan Museum New York or British Museum in London. These are prestigious museums which they keep their national treasures for public viewing, appreciation and research purposes.
“Museums are magical places. They are treasure troves of interesting stuff that make us think and see the world and our place within it differently. They have the power to make us stop and wonder and be curious, to challenge our views, and ask new questions. I have also found them to be filled with magical people who are smart and excited by the work, and the many stories and possibilities that museums hold and can share. “
Miriam Bader, Education director, Tenement Museum, New York
National Museum is the driver of museum activities in Malaysia and has been instrumental in the restoration and preservations of the nation’s heritage. Its construction, which represents the national identity, was the climax in the history of the establishment of the earlier museums such as the Taiping Museum, Perak (1883), Sarawak Museum (1888), and Selangor Museum (1889). The present National Museum building was built on the site of the former Selangor Museum, which was opened in 1906.. The National Museum has four permanent display galleries. The first gallery is known as Gallery ‘A’, which exhibits local cultural artifacts, while the second gallery known as Gallery ‘B’ displays historical artifacts, archaeological findings, traditional handicrafts, the numismatic collection, as well as Malay and Orang Asli weapons. The Central Hall is used to house temporary exhibitions.
